Young adults who were in foster care when they turned 18 and who are 25 years old or younger have a hiring preference for state jobs. That means a person who aged out of foster care and applies for a state job should be hired for a position before any other applicant who has the same level of qualifications.
On the state employment application, you will need to respond yes to these questions:
- Were you a foster youth under the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services on the day before your 18th birthday?
- If yes, are you currently 25 years of age or younger?
Your PAL staff can give you a letter that shows you qualify. See Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) Program for information about how to contact your PAL staff.
